Sultan’s palace Yogyakarta is the center of Javanese culture where the cultural ceremonies and activities are still held. There is one special occasion held annually by the Palace to commemorate the Sultan’s Birthday, called “Uyon-Uyon Adhiluhung” (the holiest Javanese songs-literally in English) which unfortunately has been abandoned by the younger generation in Indonesia. Yogyakarta has been trying to preserve the culture by conducting palace’s and folk activities. The Government put events annually and even quarterly and monthly to preserve the Javanese culture.

Fewer and fewer youths show an interest in learning how to play the Gamelan – which is ironic, especially since foreigners are interested in playing the instruments. It is important that the younger generation help preserve the culture as Indonesia will hold an annual International Gamelan Festival.
